Five points sharper with areas of microscopic roughness on the lower half of the obverse, particularly in the field before the neck. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and very attractive. No notable marks. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with splashes of darker chocolate brown toning on both sides, mostly on the obverse. Sharpness close to VF20 but there is extremely faint roughness hidden under the mostly glossy medium chocolate and light olive brown toning. No verdigris, and the only marks are an area of slightly darker chocolate brown toning in the field before the neck and a long diagonal nick in the field off the chin. Nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Rare M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but no cud at MERIC. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, with strong die clashmarks arcing through the denominator. The crumbling at the throat (the so-called "Mumps" break) is obvious. A vertical nick in the field close before the neck and a tiny rim bruise at AM in AMERICA are good identifying marks. MDS, Breen state III, with an arcing die crack at STATE plus a lighter one from the rim right of the D in UNITED arcing through the wreath to the second S in STATES. No roughness or verdigris and only a few minor marks. The most notable mark is a small planchet fissure on the rim left of the L in LIBERTY and this void extends through to the rim at TE in UNITED. The other notable marks are a rim nick left of the first S in STATES and a pinprick near the dentils left of the lower curls. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. Five points sharper but there are a few light, old scratches from the face near the eye into the hair at the left, all blended perfectly into the toning. In addition there is a dull diagonal nick under the curl on the neck, a small horizontal nick on the front edge of the neck, and a small collection of pinpricks near the dentils left of the denominator. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent in spite of the minor marks. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong, the Doubled Fraction Bar is clear, and the reverse is uncracked. A very nice example of this tough variety, and it comes with an interesting provenance.
