Lot 387 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1802 S-237 R2 EF45. Glossy medium chocolate brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields and protected areas. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. A light diagonal scratch left of the eye visible only under magnification and a very light rim bruise over the M in AMERICA are the only notable marks. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack arcing from the dentils through the N in UNITED and the wreath to the ribbon bow and another from the dentils through the M to the leaf below. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-3 while the reverse is nearly centered on the planchet.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1800 S-199 R4 G5. Off Center. Several points sharper but lightly corroded, strongest in the fields and protected areas. No marks or verdigris. The toning is a rather glossy light chocolate brown on the devices and darker olive brown in the fields and protected areas. The two-tone appearance accents the devices and the eye appeal of this cent is decent in spite of the roughness. MDS, Breen state IV, with a tiny cud break in the dentils over the F in OF (this cud would not show if the strike was centered on the planchet). Struck at least 5% off center to K-10 leaving some letters of the legend tight against the edge of the planchet. The date is strong and the legends are clear.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1802 S-228 R2 Error Fraction 1/000 PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Environmental Damage. Attractive frosty light to medium chocolate brown. This cent offers great "naked" eye appeal, but a glass reveals microscopic porosity and granularity, strongest in the field behind the portrait. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small chip out of the planchet in the field over the bust tip, a dull rim nick behind the head, and a collection of tiny nicks on the A in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with several die cracks on the reverse. The Error Fraction is clear, and this feature is shown on the PCGS label. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net VF20.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

Estimated Value $200-UP.

1800/79 S-193 R4 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair VG8. Sharpness F12 but the surfaces are uneven under glossy steel brown and tan toning blending to darker reddish chocolate in protected areas. This cent was cleaned and retoned and both sides are covered with a thin coat of wax or some similar substance. No verdigris. A dull nick in the field off the chin is the only notable mark. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack arcing through UN and the fraction bar. The date and legends are complete and the overdate is obvious.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse VG8. Slightly sharper but there is a cut on the rim over AT in STATES and a smaller one under the fraction, but neither one reaches inside the dentils. In addition there are faint hairline scratches on the portrait and a couple very shallow pit marks in the field before the face while the remainder of the planchet is smooth. Glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of lighter brown in protected areas on the reverse. EDS-MDS, Breen state II. There are dull die clashmarks through ERTY but no die cracks on the reverse. All 3 of the die-cutter errors are clear (missing left stem, 000 denominator, and U over Inverted U in UNITED). A decent example for the grade.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1802 S-239 R3 PCGS graded VF30. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with areas of darker chocolate toning on both sides, mostly on the reverse. No roughness or verdigris. The only marks are some fine scratches on the upper part of the reverse, mostly in the field at D-S and at ES-OF-A. LDS, Breen state V. There are strong die cracks along the profile into the field, and the field between two of these cracks is clearly raised as a retained cud. A neat die state. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25+. The attribution and Ellsworth provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
